A calendar is a system of measuring and recording the passage
of time. Calendars have existed for thousands of years and were
used by the Babylonians, the Egyptians, the Romans and the Greeks.
Calendars are usually collected for their colorful illustrations,
often attributed to a well-recognized artist of the period.
Advertising calendars are also widely sought, particularly those
showing company products. Calendar collecting is also a great
companion to other collecting areas.
The Calendar Collectors Society, established in 1995, is an
organization dedicated to the study and preservation of calendars
and calendar art. The history of calendars is tremendously interesting
and the calendar collecting area can take various forms. Some examples
are wall calendars, perpetual calendars, desk calendars, pocket
calendars, postcard calendars, novelty calendars (calendars made from
non-traditional materials, usually die-cuts or 3-dimensional), calendar
plates, calendar towels, almanacs, diaries, and schedules.
Many collectors build entire collections around calendar art, the
beautiful illustrations used on calendars, often produced by famous
artists or designers such as Maxfield Parrish, Norman Rockwell, Varga,
Hy Hintermeister, Rolf Armstrong, R. Atkinson Fox and others.
One of the largest calendar collecting areas is that of a companion
collectible--advertising collectors who may build a collection around
Coca-Cola, Santa Fe Railway, McDonalds, John Deere or hundreds of other
corporations or product lines, include calendars distributed by that
corporation as a part of their collection. Calendars as a companion
collectible can also fit into a sports collection, celebrity collection,
or political, royalty, World's Fair or any number of other collections.
On a worldwide basis, pocket calendars (sometimes referred to as wallet
calendars) is a large calendar collecting area in many countries.
