I am looking for a calendar collector resource to help determine the value of an original handmade calendar. I have an original handmade 1907 calendar copyrighted 1906 by the Friendship Calendar Company of New Britian, Conn. Any help would be appreciated. Napoleon Wright. E-mail: tiestay@starpower.net

I'm looking for information on Harrison Fisher calendars from the early 1900's. I have two framed prints that have three months across the bottom, but I don't know what year. One is titled "rejected" dated 1911 and the other is "Santa Claus" dated 1911. I would love to know what other prints go with these. Thanks. Theresa Goewey. E-mail: theresa31@charter.net

Hello. I am researching a photo taken for a calendar which used the photo on their October 1962 page. It is a black & white photo of a breed of dog known as the Otterhound. I research the photographer of the photo and have found that he is deceased. I am attempting to ID the very Otterhound dog in the photo. I am wondering if anyone can lend some support in helping. I can e-mail the photo if it would help. Thanks. Russell Von der Linden. E-Mail: rrvonderlinden@valley.net

PPG "American Finishes" printed calendars in the 1940's. I have a picture from one and I want to find out which year it was from. Is there any person, website or other resource which can help me? Thanks. Greg Plantamura. E-mail: gplantam@hotmail.com

Hi. I am not really a collector, however I am looking for a 1999 Toads calendar. I have contacted both the photographer and the publisher of the calendar but neither can or will help me. Can anyone direct me to someone who might have one to sell? Thanks. Cathy. E-mail: bugpuncher@aol.com

We've come across an 1897 Antikamnia calendar. Any information on this calendar would be greatly helpful. Thanks. Jordan E-mail: coas@coasbooks.com

I collect calendars and also can offer a list of calendars I have available. I live in Iraq and have calendars from Iraq and some of the Arabian region. I would like calendars from other parts of the world for my own collection. Thanks. Please keep me on your list for the newsletter. Ammar A. Jwwad. E-mail: ammar979@uruklink.net

I am looking for a 1972 Western Horseman Calendar (published by Western Horseman Magazine). Christina Lundy. E-Mail: chris@ins-center.com

I have a collection of 1,067 hotel baggage labels from around the world. My collection is entered in the Guinness World Records Book under the category of "The most hotel baggage labels in the world." Where can I find collectors who might be interested in buying the entire collection along with the entry certification? Capt. Robert Henin, USA (ret'd). E-mail: r.henin@att.net

I have a calendar from last year sent to me by Jerry Kleczka, a U.S. Congressman. In December I was having a particularly hard time using the thing. The dates just didn't seem to jive with my pocket notebook. And then I discovered that the month of November on the calendar has 31 days, sending December into confusion. If anyone is interested in having this calendar, please let me know. John Treder. E-mail: johnptreder@cs.com

I am looking for a specific kind of calendar published in the 1960's. My mother found it among an older lady's possessions who she had been taking care of. It is a sort of pinup calendar but not the type you normally see. It is a satirical type, called "the maidens," and shows several women who are obviously not your average "pinup girl" ...they are shown in various stages of sagging, bagging, and the other things that come with age, a very tongue in cheek interpretation, and the funniest thing I have seen in a long time! The pictures I have are a copy of the original calendar, published by a company called Enron out of California, in 1966. They also made a desk calendar and various accessories. I have searched the Internet with no success, and would very much like to find them! Would appreciate any direction anyone can give. Thank you. S. Hanson. E-mail: fyction1@aol.com

Hello! I'm a collector of pocket calendars from Germany and seek other collectors who might be interested in exchanging pocket calendars with me. Constance Hannes. E-mail: falkhannes@gmx.de

Feature: HPA Public Comment Period Announced

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced that the public comment period for the Hobby Protection Act runs from March 3, 2003 until May 2, 2003.

The current Act, passed in 1973, requires only two categories of reproductions - coins and political items - to be permanently marked with the date of manufacture and the word "copy."

If you support the Hobby Protection Act, and are in favor of expanding the Act to cover reproductions in other antiques and collectibles areas plagued by unmarked reproductions, you need to express your opinion now. Go to: http://collectors.org/hpa for more information on the Hobby Protection Act and suggestions of what you can do.

Please note the special petition form which you can easily pull down and use in shops or stores or at shows.

NAC Alerts Collectors of Google Phonebook

Google has enabled a new feature on their search engine called the Google Phonebook. It allows you to enter ANY valid phone number to do a reverse look-up. If successful, it will even show a map! Rick Moses of the National Association of Collectors, says "from a security perspective, this is a BIG NO-NO!"

Moses says, "think about it. Do you want everyone in your area to be able to find out where you - and your collection - are located?" Probably not. That's why many collectors use post office boxes or office addresses - so their home address is not public knowledge, particularly if they house a significant collection at their residence.

Moses explains that Google does provide a method to have your listing removed from their directory and urges collectors to consider doing just that.

For Residential Numbers--

A residential number may be removed by submitting their form located at http://www.google.com/help/pbremoval.html.

YOu will be asked to select a reason why you want your number removed. Moses says, "we suggest that you select `Privacy Concerns' option."

For Business Numbers--

Businesses that wish to have their information removed must submit the request in writing on company letterhead to: Google PhoneBook Removal, 2400 Bayshore Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043

You will need to include a telephone number where you can be reached so that they may verify the request.

The NAC strongly encourages everyone to have their information removed. Businesses that write should stress the security risks.

Don't forget ALL of your numbers. Whether removing residential or business information, make sure you specify all phone numbers for your address. Things such as FAX machines, cell phones, extra lines for Internet access, etc.

What You - the Collector - Can Do to Support the Hobby Protection Act

The current Hobby Protection Act (HPA), passed in 1973 and administered by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), requires only two categories of reproductions - coins and political items - be permanently marked with the date of manufacture and the word "copy." Over the past three decades the HPA has helped greatly in these two collecting areas. Now, it's time to expand the HPA to other collecting areas which also experience problems with reproductions and fake items. The Act is currently up for review by the FTC commissioners - and may not be reviewed again for another decade! The public comment period for the 2003 review of the Hobby Protection Act will be until May 2 according to the official notice appearing in the March 3 Federal Register. If you are a collector of glassware, china or porcelain, toys, advertising memorabilia, or any of dozens of other collecting areas plagued by unmarked reproductions, shouldn't you help try to get the Act expanded? Here's how.

Either write a letter or e-mail your comments to the Federal Trade Commission right away. Tell your own personal story about what you collect and how unmarked reproductions are a problem. You can start by saying something like, "I support the continuation of the Hobby Protection Act and strongly urge the Federal Trade Commission to recommend expansion of the Act to require all categories of antiques and collectibles to be permanently marked and dated."

E-mail letters can be sent to: hobby@ftc.gov. Postal letters should be addressed to: Office of the Secretary, Federal Trade Commission, Room H-159, 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, DC 20580. All comments MUST arrive at the FTC before May 2.

If you have friends who are also collectors, ask them to write to the Federal Trade Commission, too. This is an opportunity the collecting community cannot afford to pass by. It's an opportunity to say "reproductions are OK, but please mark and date them so we can tell the difference." It's that simple! Let's fill the mail boxes and clog the Internet!
